Transform High-Value Behaviours Into Habits

To progress in life, we must build and accumulate a set of effective daily habits that make living life more streamlined. Well-established habits also mean less effort.

Small daily habits are vital to living a more satisfying and meaningful life. It’s the patterns of our lives that help us to rise or fall. Certain rituals that we establish in our lives can produce some remarkable outcomes.

Every habit starts as a behaviour that gets repeated until you no longer have to think about it consciously. What new habits can you create to make your daily life easier? What’s missing or lacking to make your daily schedule more effortless? What tasks do you need to refine to be more effective? What tasks or behaviours do you need to eliminate to waste less time? Answering these questions is a great place to start.

We are building our lives one day at a time, one hour at a time, one interaction at a time. We build a relationship one conversation at a time. What we do in each moment matters.

Stack High-Value Habits

There are high-value habits, there are low-value habits, and there are habits that are of no value at all. Do you know which of your habits fit into these three categories?

It’s essential to know what matters to you and do it regularly. Add more high-value habits into your life and reduce your low-value habits.

High-value habits reap lifelong benefits if we just put the effort into making the habit sustainable. You could walk briskly for 30 minutes each day. It’s great for your body, mind and emotions. Or you could say ‘thank you’ to your partner twice as much as you do already.

Some habits build nothing! High-value habits help you build a more satisfying life. Your high-value habits are not time-stealers. They are the building blocks of your future, an investment of time and effort to create the future you want.

It is significant progress when you intentionally add one high-value habit into your daily repertoire before you do it automatically.

Think about this… What habits are working for you now? Add a few more good habits to help you progress faster. Could you attach another habit to one that’s already automatic? This is called "habit-stacking" because adding a new behaviour onto one already working well for you is more manageable.

Next week I’ve got two hacks for making you more likeable and changing the atmosphere in any room!

Quotes about Habits

“Champions don’t do extraordinary things. They do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking; too fast for the other team to react. They follow the habits they’ve learned.” — Charles Duhigg

“Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do).” — Stephen R. Covey

“In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It's not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.” — Tony Robbins

“First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not.” — Octavia Butler
